Kali is recuriting trustees

We would like to recruit three new members to join our hard working Board of Trustees.

We are looking for individuals with a range of skills, particularly but not exclusively in the following:

Fundraising   Experience in individual or corporate giving, and trust fundraising to provide fundraising advice and leadership for a fundraising campaign to help fund our new programmes.

Marketing and communications   To advise and support on the development of Kali’s ongoing marketing and communications

Knowledge of UK theatre industry and/or international touring   To advise and support on the development of greater national reach for the company’s work.

Ideally candidates will have an interest in theatre, particularly in contemporary theatre and diversifying theatre practice in this country.

We are particularly interested to hear from women of South Asian descent.

Expenses & Location The role is voluntary, but agreed expenses are reimbursed.

Board meetings are held quarterly in London and we are happy to facilitate Skype links to engage new members from outside London who find it difficult to travel to all Board meetings.

We hold a biannual Board ‘Away Day’, normally on a Saturday in the autumn in central London, which we ask all Board members to attend.

Legal Status Kali is a company and charity.  Board members are directors of the company and trustees of the charity.

Responsibilities  All board members are expected to offer the benefit of their specialist knowledge and contribute to the duties of the Board to:

  • Give clear strategic direction and setting overall policy by attendance at Board Meetings, Planning Days and other meetings as required
  • Review Kali’s policies and procedures annually
  • Define goals and set targets for the organisation and evaluate performance against these targets
  • Ensure Kali complies with the requirements of Companies House and the Charity Commission, employment law and other relevant legislation
  • Ensure Kali is financially viable
  • Ensure Kali complies with its Memorandum and Articles of Association, and that it pursues only the objects which are defined in it
  • Safeguard the good name and ethos of Kali
  • Make sure that the management of Kali is effective and efficient
  • Review senior staff job descriptions and appoint the Artistic Director and General Manager, and monitor their performance
  • Establish senior staff appraisal, recruitment and disciplinary panels as required.

All Board Members must have:

  • Integrity
  • Commitment to furthering Kali’s aims, mission and vision
  • A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort
  • A willingness to learn of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of being a trustee

In addition, it is desirable that Board Members have:

  • Strategic vision
  • Good, independent judgement
  • Ability to think creatively
  • A willingness to speak their mind

Candidate board members will meet with the Board Chair Allison McFayden and Artistic Director, Helena Bell. They will also attend a Board meeting as an observer and meet the other members before a commitment is made to join the Board.
