Literary Associate   Job Description

Part time on a freelance basis to undertake a flexible 100 days per year.

  • Literary Management 
  • Manage scripts arriving at Kali office, maintaining a database log
  • Liaise with writers
  • Provide dramaturgical feedback to writers of each submitted script

  • Dramaturgy for core Writer Development Programme
    Organise dramaturgy for Kali ’s core Writer Development Programme culminating in Kali’s planned Talkback Festival
  • Manage scripts submitted for the programme, distributing to reading and selection panels
  • Take part in the reading and selection panels, providing brief dramaturgical feedback on submitted scripts
  • Collate feedback from panels, edit and feedback to writers
  • Communicate Kali’s selection decisions at each stage to the relevant writers
  • Provide 3 sessions of detailed 1-1 dramaturgical feedback to 4 selected writers, in person or via email
  • Organise 3 sessions of detailed 1-1 dramaturgical feedback to 2 selected writers from other dramaturgs
  • Manage final selection process in conjunction with the Artistic Director

  • Writers Workshops Programme
  • Run fortnightly writers workshops (evenings for 6 months) at Kali for approx 6 writers selected from the programme, in conjunction with the Artistic Director
  • Organise and host occasional guest workshop speakers/leaders at the fortnightly workshops

  • Giving Voice Regional Project
    In conjunction with the Artistic Director, establish and lead on a new initiative to establish monthly writers ’ workshop for small group of Asian women new writers in Newcastle, Manchester and Leicester in conjunction with a host supporter venue
  • Directly run monthly Saturday workshops for 2 of these groups over 6 months in conjunction with a host supporter venue
  • Organise/supervise a 2nd leader to run monthly Saturday workshops for the third of these groups over 6 months
  • In conjunction with the Artistic Director and host venue, organise workshops with performers and local public readings at culmination of each programme
  • Provide dramaturgical support by phone/email to 3 regional writers of work selected for the Talkback Festival

  • General
    Attend 4 Kali Board meetings a year (evenings) and provide verbal and written report on recent and forthcoming dramaturgical activity
  • Account for incidental spending on agreed expenses for travel, accommodation and subsistence.
  • Carry out routine administration required to carry out the above duties in conjunction with the General Manager

Responsible to the Artistic Director and then the Kali Board

Contract: Flexible freelance contract. 

Payment: All inclusive fee of £12,000 per annum.   To be paid retrospectively in monthly instalments pro rata for actual days worked. 

Time:  Working on a schedule to be agreed based on an average 2 days of 8 working hours per week to be drawn from a ‘bank’ of 100 days.  With some flexibility to accommodate specific busy project periods.
Approx 22 evenings and 15 Saturdays required over a year.
Time off in lieu to be taken for days where it was necessary to work a day in excess of 8 hours.  Travelling time out of London to be working time.

Dates: Initially for 1 year.
Start date to be agreed from late June/early July.
To be reviewed and contract confirmed after 3 months.

Location:  Home working possible.  At least one day per fortnight to be spent in the Kali office in central London.
Regular Saturday workshops with regional travel before and after.

Expenses: All travel and accommodation where necessary for establishing and running the regional programmes.  
All reasonable home and mobile phone calls at actual cost incurred solely on behalf of company business.
Subsistence payable for full days out of London where it is necessary to stay overnight.

Literary Associate Job Description  Person Specification

  • Experience of working on new writing dramaturgy and/or productions in professional theatre
  • Understanding of the needs, conventions and process of writing for performance
  • Knowledge and understanding of typical ways in which new theatre writing is developed and produced
  • Ability, experience and understanding of the processes of analysing a script for performance, to objectively evaluate its dramatic strengths and weaknesses and articulate that clearly
  • A sensitive understanding of a writer's creative process and the ability to nurture and encourage her in the development of a script
  • Ability to deal tactfully and sympathetically with people new to the process of writing for performance
  • Ability to articulate feedback clearly and confidently
  • Empathy with and understanding of cultural traditions and social obligations impacting on the work of an Asian Woman writer
  • Good grasp of written and spoken English
  • One South Asian language desirable but not essential
  • Reasonable skills in word-processing, emails and use of simple databases
  • Ability to take the initiative and self organise and prioritise own work load
  • Ability to multitask, prioritise time and manage own time efficiently and effectively
  • Ability to establish good working relationships with other and to communicate effectively with others in a work team
  • Ability to take a positive, creative approach to problem solving
